The illustrious career of Ulrich van den Berg began when he first picked up a club at the age of eight. He was largely self-taught in his early years, and played most of his golf at East London Golf Club. His junior career was the pre- cursor of what was to come. He represented Border at Inter-provincials for five consecutive years. From 1994-1996 he made the SA Universities team (he also won the SAU title in 1994). He also gained his Springbok colours in 1996, which he retained for three years. But his crowning year as an amateur without question came in 1997, when he won the South African Strokeplay title, the Transvaal Amatuer, the Western Province Strokeplay title and the two man team event in Argentina, which he partnered Trevor Immelman for. He won the individual title there too. After another solid year of consolidation 1998, Ulrich decided to turn pro, and entered himself into the Tour School for the 98/99 season. His first win as a professional came just over a year later when he won the 2000 Riviera Resort Classic. He has very much kept the momentum going since, and his best year was arguably the 2005/2006 season, when he finished sixth on the Order of Merit. Ulrich now boasts six career victories on the Sunshine Tour, most recently the Vodacom Business at Humewood in 2010. He has amassed more than 70 top 10 finishes.
